How HumHunt handles your information
Last updated: 24 September 2026
1. Who we are
HumHunt ("HumHunt", "we", "us", or "our") is a melody-recognition web application that helps you identify songs by humming, created by Emmanuel Duru.
HumHunt works without a user account. You are not asked for your name, email address, or password to use the core features of the app.
2. Scope
This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect when you use HumHunt at humhunt.app (the "Service"), why we collect it, the legal bases we rely on, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your rights, especially if you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Microphone audio — When you tap Start Humming, HumHunt records audio from your device's microphone for up to about 20 seconds. That recording is used only to attempt song identification. On the web, your browser will ask for microphone permission before recording begins.
Recording may incidentally pick up background voices or conversations. We recommend a quiet, private setting.
We use humming audio to match melodies to songs. We do not use it to identify you as a person, create a voiceprint, or carry out biometric identification or authentication.
3.2 Optional lyric hints and search queries — If you type a lyric phrase or related search text, that text is sent to our music search / metadata providers so we can return results (see Section 6).
3.3 Device, network, and security data — Our hosting and security providers, and the Service itself, may process standard technical data needed to deliver and protect the Service such as IP address, approximate location derived from IP, browser or device type, request timestamps, referring URLs, and similar logs. We use this for security, abuse prevention, rate limiting, performance, and troubleshooting.
3.4 Data stored on your device — HumHunt may save data on your device (for example in browser storage), including recent search history, starred favourites, match feedback, onboarding status, and cached results. This stays on your device unless you clear it. We do not sync it to our servers as an account profile.
3.5 What we do not collect for core use — We do not require an account, and we do not collect your name, email, or password merely to use humming recognition or lyric search.
4. How we use information
We use the information above to:
• Provide melody recognition and related search / metadata results
• Rank and display matching songs and previews
• Operate, secure, and improve the Service
• Remember local history and favourites on your device
• Comply with law and respond to lawful requests where required
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your humming recordings or search activity with third parties for their advertising or marketing. We do not use humming recordings for advertising, profiling, or training unrelated models.
5. Legal bases (EEA / UK / Switzerland)
Microphone audio for song identification — Legal basis: Consent — when you tap Start Humming after being informed, and after microphone permission is granted. You may withdraw consent at any time (Section 9).
Optional lyric hints / search text — Legal basis: Consent — when you submit the text.
Hosting, security, rate-limiting, and technical logs — Legal basis: Legitimate interests — running a secure, reliable Service and preventing abuse. You may object (Section 9).
Data stored only on your device — Under your control on your device, not processed on our servers as account content.
Where we rely on consent, you may refuse or withdraw it. Humming needs microphone consent; lyric search needs you to submit text.
We do not use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects about you.
6. Recipients (categories)
Depending on how you use the Service, personal data may be disclosed to these categories of recipients:
• Hosting and security providers — to run and protect the website and related infrastructure (may include technical logs and traffic data)
• Melody / audio recognition providers — to match humming audio to songs when you start a search
• Music metadata and preview providers — to return titles, artwork, and short previews from search terms or lyric hints
• Streaming or music platforms you choose to open — when you follow an outbound link; those sites are independent controllers under their own policies
Where a provider processes data only on our instructions to deliver the Service, they act as a processor or equivalent service provider. Where you leave HumHunt and use another site, that site decides its own purposes.
For more detail about the specific providers we use at any time, contact info@humhunt.app.
7. International transfers
Some providers may process data outside the EEA, United Kingdom, or Switzerland (including the United States).
Where that happens, we rely on safeguards allowed by law, such as an approved transfer framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses (and UK / Swiss equivalents where required), with supplementary measures where appropriate.
Contact info@humhunt.app if you want more information about transfers.
8. Retention
Humming / microphone audio — Processed for recognition in near real time. Not intentionally stored on our servers after the request completes. Temporary copies may exist briefly in memory or transit, then are discarded.
Lyric hints / search queries for a request — Kept only as needed to complete that request and for short-lived security / debugging logs, not as a long-term search profile.
Technical / security logs — Typically up to 90 days, unless longer is needed for an incident investigation or legal obligation.
Data on your device — Until you clear it in the app, clear site data in your browser, or remove the app / site data.
9. Your choices and rights
Choices:
• Deny or revoke microphone access in your browser or device settings.
• Clear local history and related on-device data in the app (where available) or via browser site data controls.
• Use private / incognito browsing if you do not want local history to persist.
Rights (EEA / UK / Switzerland): You may have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port (where applicable), object to legitimate-interest processing, withdraw consent, and lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Because there are no accounts, and most data is either processed briefly or stored only on your device, many rights are exercised by clearing local data or not using mic / lyric features. For data we may hold in logs or via providers, email info@humhunt.app. We may need to verify your request and will respond within the time required by law.
Ireland: Data Protection Commission — www.dataprotection.ie. You may also complain to your local authority (e.g. UK ICO, Swiss FDPIC).
10. Cookies and similar technologies
HumHunt uses local device storage for history, favourites, feedback, onboarding state, and cached results.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party ad trackers in the core experience described here.
Hosting and security providers may use strictly necessary cookies or similar technologies for security, load balancing, or network performance.
If we later introduce non-essential cookies, we will update this policy and, where required, ask for consent first.
You can clear or block cookies and site storage in your browser. Blocking strictly necessary technologies may affect the Service.
11. Children's privacy
HumHunt is not directed at children.
Ireland / EEA: generally 16 (or parent/guardian permission where your country's digital consent age allows).
UK: generally 13 (or appropriate permission where required).
We do not knowingly collect personal data from children below the applicable age. If you think that has happened, contact info@humhunt.app.
12. Security
We use appropriate measures such as HTTPS, keeping recognition secrets off the public web bundle, controlled request paths where applicable, and rate limiting / security controls on our infrastructure.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
13. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy. The "Last updated" date will change when we do.
For material changes — especially to consent-based processing, or significant new data, purposes, or recipients, we will take reasonable steps to notify you (for example a notice in the Service) and, where required, obtain fresh consent.
Continued use after a non-material update applies that update to ongoing use. It does not replace consent where consent is required.
